Throughout its 238-year history, The Equinox has served as one of America's most historically significant lodgings. Boasting a legacy that predates America's independence, the hotel is a bastion of romance, colorful landscapes, and elite accommodations.
Since first opening in 1769, The Equinox has hosted national luminaries such as Ulysses S. Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Mary Todd Lincoln. Marsh's Tavern, now one of the Equinox dining areas, was an important meeting place for American Revolutionaries and Vermont's legendary Green Mountain boys. In the 1800's Charles Orvis's family owned & operated the inn and founded the Orvis Company here, and the Orvis flagship retail store is still located in Manchester village just as the original store since 1856.

The Equinox: Then and Now
Steeped in history and saturated with historic atmosphere, the Equinox stands as an icon of New England lifestyle over the past two centuries.
The roots of today's 2,300-acre Equinox Golf Resort & Spa date back to 1769, and the original structure, one of Manchester’s first lodgings, was a wooden, two-story building called the Marsh Tavern. The Marsh Tavern quickly became a popular gathering spot for locals, serving as a hotbed for memorable figures during the Revolution, including the legendary Green Mountain Boys. The first Tory property seized by revolutionaries to support their war efforts, today, this building serves as one of the resort’s most popular restaurants and hosts our Vim's Holidays' Passover tea room.
The name "Equinox" first emerged in 1853, when owner Franklin Orvis opened his own hotel, the "Equinox House," in his father's home next door to the Marsh Tavern. The hotel's reputation as a premier getaway resort for the wealthy and powerful was solidified in 1863, when Mrs. Abraham Lincoln summered here with sons Robert and Tad. Robert returned to Manchester often in the following years, building his Hildene estate in Manchester, and attracting ever larger groups of his wealthy friends from New York and Chicago. The Equinox continued to shine as a bucolic retreat for society's upper crust, providing lodging for four presidents, among them Teddy Roosevelt, who gave a campaign speech on the front lawn.
Today's Equinox still retains its vintage appeal, right down to the 285-foot white columned facade and breezy collonade.
Set in one of Vermont's more picture-perfect towns (parts of the Diane Keaton movie "Baby Boom" were filmed near here) and facing the village green, you can find vintage structures, the Bennington County Court House, an old music hall, well stocked shops for every country pursuit, and miles of the original marble sidewalks (mined from local quarries), all lovingly preserved by an Historic Trust. Mount Equinox stands directly behind the resort; rising over 3,800 feet above the village of Manchester, it contains a 12 mile trail system for hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and mountain biking on protected land, and the Equinox Pond- a 14 acre catch and release fly-fishing haven reserved exclusively for Equinox guests.
The resort consists of 17 structures on its property featuring six different styles, reflecting its 200 years of American history. Several multi-million dollar restorations and additions were completed in 2003, earning the Equinox the coveted AAA four diamond rating and Starwoods Luxury Hotel Collection designation.
Considered a “four seasons” destination, guests of the hotel can ski, hike, fish, go off-road driving, or practically anything else you can think of in the great outdoors (or in, if you visit their spa). One of the top resort destinations in the Northeast, the Equinox continues to provide its guests with every luxurious modern convenience and amenity, without losing the unique qualities that made it a landmark and an National Historic Place.
Pursue your passion for the game- The Golf Club at Equinox provides golfers the best Vermont golf has to offer with a world-class golf course adjacent to the The Equinox Resort & Spa.

It's truly a delight just to be on the course, featuring hilly terrain, spectacular scenery, fairways that are perfect, great greens, challenging rough, and a beautiful layout.
